Program Objective
This program is designed to prepare students for employment as advanced cross trained nursing assistants. This program offers a broad foundation of knowledge and skills, expanding the traditional role of the nursing assistant, for both acute and long program care settings. It is designed to prepare the student in a higher educational career than a Nursing Assistant, Patient Care Assistant or home Health Aide. The course includes two additional modules, Phlebotomist and Electrocardiogram that are required for the satisfactory completion and certification for PCT program. The program prepares and equips students to become a Patient Care Technician with electrocardiogram (EKG) and Phlebotomist (PBT) skills.
Scope and Practice for a Patient Care Technician
The Patient Care Technician prepares you to work in a hospital environment under the direct supervision of a registered nurse. Students are trained to perform clinical skills such as blood collection, EKGs, catheterization, recording vital signs and patient treatments, and other tasks related to patient care. Patient Care Technician graduates can expect to find employment opportunities in hospitals, rehabilitation centers, and placement agencies.
General Information
The curriculum is standardized in compliance with licensing authorities and accreditation agencies to provide the competency based, outcome oriented, didactic, laboratory and clinical experience. Students are schedule to attend 20 hours per week, 5 days a week, and are scheduled to alternate between didactic and laboratory sessions. Upon commencement of the program the student will be provided a syllabus that contains the course specific objectives.
The Patient Care Technician Program incorporates the latest teaching aids, audiovisual equipment that allows students to obtain practical experience for the community/institutional component of the program.
Upon completion of the program, students will:
- Demonstrate the basic principles and practices of basic patient care and safety, home health care, physical and occupational therapy, healthcare law and ethics, communication and interpersonal skills and safety.
- Know and execute phlebotomy and electrocardiography skills
- Recognize, spell, define, and use appropriate medical terminology, words, and abbreviation.
- Lean about Anatomy and physiology, microbiology and infection control
- Earn a Diploma in Patient Care Technology
Graduate of this program are also qualified to work as:

- C- Physical Therapy aides
- D- Occupational Therapy Aid
- E- Phlebotomy Technician
- F- EKG Technician
Course Descriptions
Students learn theory, practice skills in a lab setting, and participate in a clinic experience. Students complete a separate course in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) - heart saver level in order to graduate.
